ULLAS Adult Literacy Programme

ULLAS Adult Literacy Programme

“Literacy is the bridge from darkness to light, and teaching even one person can change a community.”

Our school successfully conducted the ULLAS Adult Literacy Programme, mandated by CBSE, with the active participation of students from Grades 11 and 12. The programme aimed to empower the school’ bus drivers and support staff with their basic reading, writing, and speaking skills in English, thereby fostering inclusivity and mutual respect within the school community.

The programme was conducted over a period of seven days. Grade 11 students played a key role in laying the foundation of literacy by introducing the adults to basic alphabets, sight words, and simple phrases. These sessions helped participants recognise commonly used words and understand everyday instructions relevant to their daily work.

Building on this foundation, Grade 12 students took the initiative to a higher level by helping the adults read and write in English. They guided them in forming words, constructing short sentences, and improving basic comprehension and writing skills. The ‘Each One Teach One’ approach further strengthened learning through picture-based activities, role-play, guided conversations, and regular practice, enabling participants to speak with greater confidence.

By the end of the programme, the adults were able to read basic words, write simple sentences, and communicate using short, meaningful expressions. The ULLAS programme not only enhanced literacy skills but also boosted confidence, contributing to a more inclusive and supportive school environment.
