Competency Based Assessment

Continuous Professional Development of teachers enhances the teaching skills of teachers. In order to cater to the professional development of teachers, a two-day Capacity Building Programme workshop was organized by National Public School, Kengeri, Bangalore, for its teachers. on 14th and 15th May 2025, on the topic, “Competency Based Assessment”

The session commenced with the auspicious ‘Lighting of the Lamp’ by the dignitaries. The resource persons of the workshop, Mrs. Suneetha Lankipalli, Alpine Public School, Bikasipura, Bengaluru and Mrs. Tejaswini, Soundarya Central School, Sidedahalli, Bengaluru, conducted the session on both days, in a very interesting manner. Around 60 enthusiastic teachers from the school attended the enriching session, and enhanced their skill.

The session began with an energiser activity to set the session in motion. A pre-assessment was conducted to assess the previous knowledge of the participants. Many key aspects of Competency Based Assessment were discussed in the session. The key topics dealt in the session were-Art and Science of creating good questions, objectives of an assessment, role of questions, types of questions, key principles of good assessment, understanding terminologies of MCQs, advantages and challenges of MCQs, qualities of a good MCQ, Understanding by Design (UBD), objectives of FRQs(Free Response Questions) /CRQs(Constructed Response Questions), different kinds of  FRQs, principles of devising a good FRQ, characteristics of good FRQs, and importance and types of rubrics. A video on emotional well-being and mental health focussed on addressing the emotional well-being of the students.

The resource persons ensured the whole session was lively and interactive through handouts, PPT slides, videos and thoughtful activities. A post-assessment was conducted to assess the teachers’ learning post-session.

The teachers participated actively in the interactive session and had many take-aways from the enriching session.
